The Health Care Aide program prepares students to become essential members of the healthcare team, assisting professional nurses in activities of daily living in long-term care, home care, and assisted living settings. The curriculum covers anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, communication, behavior management, and health and wellness. Graduates can work in home care, assisted living facilities, and long-term care under the supervision of regulated health professionals. The program includes a practicum with additional requirements like First Aid/CPR, criminal record check, and immunizations. Graduates must pass the provincial HCA Examination to receive the Government of Alberta HCA Provincial Curriculum Certificate. Admission requirements include English language proficiency, digital literacy, and prior learning assessment. The program covers topics like HCA role and responsibility, human body and chronic illness, communication, person-centered care, and clinical placements.
